EURO 2012 Betting Blog: Part 1 - Who's making the cut?

EURO 2012 Betting Blog: Part 1 - Who's making the cut?

It became public knowledge yesterday that Roy Hodgson would be picking his 23 Englishman squad for EURO 2012 at 1pm on the 16th of May, meaning the markets on who would make the squad would now become a lot more lively.

Forget your Joe Hart's, Ashley Cole's etc. as there's no money to be made on these names, it's more the fringe players where the money is at and looking at the latest odds on offer today there's a chance for a few pennies to be made.

John Terry has caused plenty of debates up and down the country over the past few weeks due to the ongoing court case which involved the brother of his England team mate Rio Ferdinand. Opinions seem to be split on whether he will be travelling to Ukraine this summer and no matter which side of the fence you fall you can get 11/10 (Paddy Power) the he won't go or 8/11 (Bet365) he will.

Fabio Capello managed to disagree with the nation on the right back of choice when he was in charge, something that Roy may feel the need to settle and earn his first pat on the back from the public. With Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker and Micah Richards all available for selection, it's Richards who is at best value to board the plane at 10/11 (Paddy Power) - and if you're really confident he's 9/2 (StanJames) to start against France - may be a potential Premier League winners medal will be enough to convince the new boss?

One of the rules of this competition is that each nation has to pick at least 3 keepers, we have Joe Hart and erm....? With Rob Green still a Championship keeper at the time of naming the squad, Paul Robinson retired from international football, Scott Carson somewhere in Turkey and Ben Foster still unsure of his England future John Ruddy must be a good bet. Having had a great season this term for Norwich you can get as high as 7/1 (SkyBet) for one of the rare English starting Prem stoppers.

Finally, England have always struggled on the left side of the midfield. Problems such as Adam Johnson not getting enough game time, Stewart Downing being Stewart Downing and the small problem of Gareth Bale being Welsh there could be a recall for a man in Ligue 1. Joe Cole has had a decent season with Lille who are currently lying 3rd in their domestic league. He's scored 4 goals in his 30 appearances and was, if you remember, signed by Hodgson at Liverpool. He's certainly worth a couple of pounds at 25/1 (Bet365)!

Here's a few more little bets that could be worth a bit of investment -

To make the cut -

Aaron Lennon - 15/8 Sporting Bet
Grant Holt - 10/1 BlueSquare
Ryan Shawcross - 25/1 BetVictor

Top English Goal Scorer -

Frank Lampard - 14/1 Coral
Tony Radford
Haha good slant on the selection conundrum!
